Waterford Speedbowl’s mid-season championship Overdrive Radio 300 event hit the asphalt Saturday night with extra distance racing by the track’s regular six divisions. The big winner was Keith Rocco of Berlin, scoring top honors in the night’s 100-lap SK Modified® main event. Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton won an entertaining 50-lap Valenti Auto Mall Late Model race, while Old Lyme’s Jeff Smith was a first-time winner in the SK Light Modifieds after an impressive performance. Joey Logano and the Team Penske No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang team started Friday night’s Subway Fircracker 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race in the 11th position after rain canceled the final two rounds of knockout qualifying earlier in the day.
With only 100-laps on the docket, Logano knew he would need to try and get to the front of the field as the race went green. Continue reading
A large crowd turned out for Waterford Speedbowl’s Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday race program in advance of the upcoming holiday weekend and they were treated to motorsports action capped by a fireworks display. Connecticut native Luke Emmons wowed the crowd with motorcycle stunts and in racing action, Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott and Anthony Marvin of Colchester shared INEX race victories in the respective Legend Car and Bandolero features. Middletown’s Joey Logano had thought he was going to be back in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last weekend at Kentucky. But a change of plans put teammate Brad Keselowski in the car. Now, Logano is back in the Team Penske No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang for the Subway Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway and is also scheduled to run at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen in the coming weeks.
